This impressive and rare Louis XVI style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Mahogany, Kingwood Commode à Vantaux, after a model by Guillaume Benneman and Joseph Stöckel, and dating from the late 19th Century.

Stöckel and Benneman designed the original model this commode is based on for Marie-Antoinette for the Salon des Jeux at Fontainebleau. Guillaume Benneman was the chief ébéniste to Louis XIV and Marie-Antoinette from 1786 to 1792, producing many fine pieces for the Royal Chateaux at Versailles and Fontainebleau under the directorship of Jean Hauré until 1788 and later under Thierry de Ville d'Avray. This model was also executed later by the world renowned cabinet maker Francois Linke.

Of trapezoid form with green variegated marble top above ormolu oak-leaf leaved frieze, set with a pair of drawers, above a pair of panelled doors with a central ormolu mask surmounted by plumed helmet, quivers of arrows, battle axes and meandering foliage, panelled concave sides with ribbon-tied fluted corners. The pair of doors open to reveal a large cupboard which is fitted with a central shelf, the cabinet is raised on large ormolu acanthus-sheathed hairy paw feet.
