A Fine and very imposing Early Victorian tapestry fire screen with carved giltwood  rococo frame with scrolling acanthus leaves.

The central glazed tapestry depicts “Dignity and Impudence” the renowned painting by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer.

"Dignity and Impudence" was characteristic of Landseer’s tendency to give human attributes to animals. Landseer contrasted the large, dignified bloodhound with the small, mischievous terrier. The dogs, were actually ‘Grafton’ and ‘Scratch’ and owned by Landseer’s friend, Jacob Bell, who commissioned the original painting of 1839, (now housed in the Tate).

Landseer's most famous work is the Lion sculptures of Trafalgar Square.

This fire screen was obtained from Luddington Manor which was once occupied by relatives of Anne Hathaway, the wife of playwright William Shakespeare, it is believed that it was a meeting place for Anne and William.
