John Stancliffe Penny Moon 8 Day Longcase Clock

Wonderful and rare 8 Day ‘Penny-Moon’ Longcase clock by John Stancliffe of Barkisland (North-West)

The 12 inch engraved and matted brass dial with silvered chapter ring engraved ‘J Stancliffe - Barkisland’ with a silvered engraved Penny Moon with moon & stars above a silvered mouthed calendar.

Fine four pillar movement with rack striking in good order with original bell, brass bobbed pendulum and brass weights.

The swan neck oak case standing 234cm in height is profusely carved throughout complete with its original lock and key.

*The clock is in superb working order and is for collection only, however I may deliver & set-up within a 40 mile radius.

John Stancliffe

John Stancliffe was working circa 1730 onwards until his death in 1780. Brian Loomes records "...a clock made by John Stancliffe of Barkisland (near Halifax) at a time when Thomas Lister the Elder was his apprentice, which puts it between 1730 and 1737".

John's son Joseph was born in 1740, baptised in Ripponden, and apprenticed to William Finch, watchmaker, circa 1753. After this he worked with his father, and at this time their output was signed "Stancliffe Barkisland". After John's death in 1780 the full signature Joseph Stancliffe Barkisland appears to have been used.
