Fine 30 Hour Longcase Clock by Thomas Kefford of Royston

The movement: (Fully serviced, overhauled and cleaned)

It is said that many of Thomas Kefford’s movements emulate those of the period in London, this one is no exception, with four knopped and finned pillars, outside countwheel, perfectly made pinion and wheels giving you the real quality that separates it from the run of the mill clocks.... you only have to listen to how mellow it’s beat is, it’s one of the best sounding 30 hour clocks I’ve ever seen.

Having a 12” square brass dial with central mask spandrels, silvered chapter ring having a thin minute band, fleur-de-lys half hour markers and fine arrowed inner quarter markers. Engraved to lower portion is Thomas Kefford Roy-ston set upon a finely matted centre with foliate engraving around the silvered calendar aperture.

The case:
(Firstly the missing door capital in the images has now been repaired by my restorer)

Originally having a glass lenticel to the trunk door which was typical of Kefford’s clocks this has been blocked, and blocked off a very long time ago, not recently.

This could be for several reasons:

Owner disliked and had blocked off

Was damaged and decided to block off as no longer was the fashion

As lenticels went out of fashion it was blocked off

I’d like to think it was the latter, however I rather think that it would be nice to have its lenticel back showing the original brass bobbed pendulum gently swinging through the glass so I am offering the following two options:

• Buy the clock as it is for listed price
or
• For an addition £200 it can go into my restorer and have the Lenticel replaced and the door re-veneered and full polish.

**You decide**

Finished in Oak with a short caddy top, original glass to both the front door and sides, original brass strap hinges to door, period lock and key with original large brass escutcheon, moulded surround to trunk door upon shaped apron to base, structurally solid with original backboard and no active worm.

Condition report:

Hood:
The clock dates Circa 1740 so with this in mind it is in very good order throughout, there was a missing capital to the hood door and this has now been rectified by my restorer, a small side return moulding was loose, again this has been attended to.

Trunk:
Various ageing to the wood which has been wax fed, structurally superb, small knotch of wood missing where door lock sits behind when closed, again this can be looked at by my restorer if the lenticel option is taken. Slight bow to door, commensurate with age.

Movement:
Is superb order, recently taken completely apart and serviced/cleaned.. in excellent order.

Measurements: TBC
